Bryce Canyon is a unique area of stunning beauty with red/orange towering spires called Hoodoos, formed by frost-wedging and erosion. This image was taken at one of the many viewpoints along the rim of the canyon. The rainbow was created as a rain storm hit the mountains beyond the canyon.
Bryce Canyon was designated as Bryce Canyon National Monument by President Warren G. Harding in 1916 and later became Bryce Canyon National Park in 1928. It was named after Ebenezer Bryce, a Morman homesteader who moved to the area in 1875. Despite the name, Bryce Canyon isn’t actually a canyon — it’s a series of giant natural amphitheaters carved into the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah.
