The Grand Canyon at sunset is an awe-inspiring site. This image was taken just before sunset from Mathers Point, one of the many viewpoints that are accessible by park bus, West of the Village. There is a walking trail that spans the entire distance from the Visitor Center, West to the last viewpoint, Hermits Rest.
Grand Canyon National Park was first declared a National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. He famously said “Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it.” In 1919 President Woodrow Willson officially established it as National Park, the 17th at that time. In 1979 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its geological significance and stunning landscapes. The park is 1.2 million acres, spanning 277 miles in length and 6000 feet at its deepest point.
