The overlook is located in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands at an elevation of 6,000 feet. The Green River flows through the area, approximately 1,300 feet below the overlook, on its way to the Colorado River. Canyonlands National Park was established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The park is divided into three districts, Island in the Sky, The Needles and The Maze, covering approximately 527 square miles.
