Killdeer are resourceful and resilient birds, known for their distinctive, repetitive call that sounds like "kill-deer, kill-deer," which is easily recognizable and giving it its name. They are known for their agility, quick movements, and fast pace. Their keen eyesight helps them detect potential predators from afar. Unlike many birds that build elaborate nests, the Killdeer prefers to lay its eggs on the ground, typically in gravel, sand, or bare soil. The eggs are often speckled and camouflaged to look like rocks, providing an extra layer of protection from predators. The parents are highly protective of their eggs or chicks and will use deceptive behaviors, such as a dramatic "broken-wing display" to distract predators and keep their nests safe. In this display, they fake injury by dragging one wing along the ground while running away, tricking predators into thinking they have an easy target and drawing them away from the nest. They often forage for food, a variety of insects, worms, small invertebrates, and even seeds, by running quickly across the ground and pecking at potential food items, sometimes stopping abruptly to look around before continuing.
